The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Other Tales of Terror
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Other Tales of Terror | Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Mighall
8 posts | 35 read | 17 to read
"The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" Stevenson's famous exploration of humanity's basest capacity for evil, has become synonymous with the idea of a split personality. More than a moral tale, this dark psychological fantasy is also a product of its time, drawing on contemporary theories of class, evolution, criminality, and secret lives. Also in this volume are "The Body Snatcher," which charts the murky underside of Victorian medical practice, and "Olalla," a tale of vampirism and "The Beast Within" which features a beautiful woman at its center. This new edition features a critical introduction, chronology, suggestions for further reading, explanatory notes, and appendixes, including an abridged extract from "A Chapter on Dreams" and an essay on the scientific context of Jekyll and Hyde.

A fun little gothic novella. There are some beautiful, picturesque scenes that unfold on the page and some truly eccentric characters. I quite enjoyed it, though I was surprised that the title character wasn't introduced until half way through.

I'll stop there for fear of spoilers, but it's worth a read.

'Now,' said the doctor, ' my part is done, and, I may say, with some vanity, well done.'

A creepy, atmospheric Gothic novella with doomed love and vampires.

This took me awhile to get into (same with older gothic stuff thinking about it) but it grew on me a lot and left me very intrigued with a desire to read some more classic gothic literature so I'm looking for recommendations!

Bambolina_81 I love this genre...how about...The Mysteries of Udolpho, Northanger Abbey, Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Dracula 😮 8y
smccallum @Bambolina_81 Thank you! I read Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde many years ago but I'll certainly look into the others 👍 8y
quirkyreader Also try more stuff by Stevenson. He wrote some goodies. 8y
ZachHerman Obvious suggestion, but I am working through Dracula. It's not the best Gothic novel, but it's the one I'd be most excited to have written. 8y
