Agents of Winter
Agents of Winter | Ada Maria Soto
4 posts | 1 read
Arthur and Martin have settled into a quiet life, orbiting each other both on the job and off. Still in recovery from his last devastating mission, Martin is adjusting to his new reality as a permanent desk jockey at the Agency while Arthur is adjusting to his deep feelings for Martin. He's not even sure what to put on the Agency's dreaded form B-837, the "relationship form". Are they dating? "Involved"? In a committed "something"? The winter holidays interrupt their routines with the annual threat of annual obligatory trips for both of them. At first, old habits rise up to conspire to keep them separated until after the new year, but Martin derails both their plans when he asks Arthur to join him for a week in New York City. He's still haunted by the ghosts of his childhood, but is he ready to face a new future with Arthur? He knows there is only one way to find out, despite his understated anxiety. Arthur arrives in New York City ready to play tourist, but instead finds himself unexpectedly and deeply entwined in the mysteries of Martin's past. Through a risky confrontation with the underground art world to a secret, heavily guarded storage unit, to sharing the quiet joy of impromptu cooking lessons, Martin and Arthur get to know each other on a deeper level than they ever have before. Together they confront the hardest and scariest mission they've ever faced: learning what it means, and how it feels, to fall in love. In this sequel to the acclaimed His Quiet Agent, Ada Maria Soto once again brings to life the complex and deeply moving stories of Martin and Arthur as they face new challenges as well as ghosts from their pasts. Heat level: zero.

A nostalgic reread treasured for the much needed comfort it brings. Soto captures the deeply eloquent, vulnerable inner life of her characters perfectly, penning a novella built on the foundation of enduring affection & a no-frills storyline where my favourite couple take a vacation to NYC, face childhood ghosts, shady art dealers & eat a great deal of food. A novella that, for me, feels like that small contented sigh breathed right before sleep.

Ah, a book written just for me. 😁

Lovely follow up to His Quiet Agent and Merlin in the Library, which gives more insight into Martin's complicated self. A very low-key, loving and supportive romance.... not exactly “soft“ given all they've been through, but very tender.

Faranae My personal trouble is thinking it's a handshake situation and the other person thinks it is a hug or double-kiss situation, or worse, I know it's a double-kiss but is it an air kiss or actual cheek kisses? Oh no, are we doing a triple kiss? When does this stop?! (The trials of a native bilingual in the francophonie...) 5mo

I haven't been reading much, especially for my challenges, due to Octocon looming (Oct 7 & 8! Online and in Dublin!). Still, I managed an accidental one for the #MRC2023

Soto is Mexican/American living in the South Pacific, and threw several Indigenous Mexican dishes into this book. This book is all vibes, no plot, and that's just what I hoped for. I'm really curious about what these two will do when they finally quit their jobs.

willaful How have I not read this yet?! 7mo
Faranae @willaful It only got published last year, while His Quiet Agent was released in 2017, so there's been a big gap and I could see it falling off the radar. I only knew about it because I went to Soto's website for unrelated reasons I can no longer recall. 7mo

Agents of Winter is the acclaimed sequel of His Quiet Agent, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. While spending the holidays together in New York, Arthur and Martin explore the city, leaving ghosts & long-buried truths in their wake as Martin slowly allows Arthur into his troubled past, opening his heart & mind to the man he loves. Their relationship, chaste and tender, built on a cornerstone of trust, was beautiful to watch unfold.
