Light Boxes
Light Boxes: A Novel | Shane Jones
5 posts | 14 read | 7 to read
A poignant and fantastical first novel by a timeless new literary voice. With all the elements of a classic fable, vivid descriptions, and a wholly unique style, this idiosyncratic debut introduces a new and exciting voice to readers of such authors as George Saunders, Kurt Vonnegut, and Yann Martel. In Light Boxes, the inhabitants of one closely-knit town are experiencing perpetual February. It turns out that a god-like spirit who lives in the sky, named February, is punishing the town for flying, and bans flight of all kind, including hot air balloons and even children's kites. It's February who makes the sun nothing but a faint memory, who blankets the ground with snow, who freezes the rivers and the lakes. As endless February continues, children go missing and more and more adults become nearly catatonic with depression. But others find the strength to fight back, waging war on February.

Mehso-so

Light Box is a short, unusually styled read. I think the style just wasn‘t for me, even though the story was interesting.

Amazing. Just as simple as retelling the Persephone myth to explain the monster that is the creative soul, and just as complex. Beautiful writing. Precise imagery. Fantastical arabesques of words casting uncanny shadows to ensorcel the reader's spirit.

Stumbled on this little gem few years ago and it's now always on my yearly must read list. It's a whimsical tale about a town that is plagued by February, who cast a permanent winter upon the area from his place high in the clouds. It also has The Girl Who Smells of Smoke and Honey too...

...so there's that.

Today's Recommendation: Light Boxes By Shane Jones.
"I wanted to write you a story about magic. I wanted rabbits appearing from hats. I wanted balloons lifting you into the sky. It turned out to be nothing but sadness, war, heartbreak. You never saw it, but there‘s a garden inside me."
