Secrets So Deep | Ginny Myers Sain

Ginny Myers Sain‘s paranormal YA thriller is a slow-paced affair populated with generic characters (with the exception of Avril) structured around a central play that simply didn‘t convince me as being something so extraordinary as to be Tony Award winning. Worse, the twists (with one exception) are telegraphed too early and the paranormal elements too wishy-washy. It isn‘t a bad book, but it did struggle to hold my attention.

There are so many things that I liked about this novel! Ginny Myers Sain, instead of using standard chapters, tells Avril‘s story in acts and scenes, which is perfect seeing as this novel is set in a theater camp. I also enjoyed the mirroring between the play Midnight Music and Avril and Cole's story. I liked many of the characters as well. Secrets So Deep is a great novel that I flew through, wanting to know what secrets would be uncovered.

Sain writes realistic characters in extremely atmospheric settings. I could feel Whisper Cove in my bones. I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next.

I have to say that the ending of the novel was definitely my favorite part. While it was predictable, it was still a fun read. I did find the majority of the novel to be slow, but I think that‘s like because I don‘t read a lot of mysteries and thrillers. I guess I expected it to be…I don‘t know… a little more thrilling. Overall, I think people who generally enjoy mysteries and thrillers will like this book, it just wasn‘t the right book for me.

I really enjoyed reading Secrets So Deep. I like the camp atmosphere. And adding the theatrical theme was different and fun. It was interesting how the author worked the play into the plot. I thought I had some things figured out and I was close but there were a few twist thrown in. I like how the main character was trying to find out about her mother and things she did find. The friendships she made were good. This was a quick read.
