Blithe Spirit, Hay Fever, Private Lives: Three Plays
Blithe Spirit, Hay Fever, Private Lives: Three Plays | Noel Coward
5 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
In Blithe Spirit, Charles Condomine receives a visit from his first wife, Elvira; unfortunately, Charles is now married to Ruth, and Elvira is a ghost. The bohemian protagonists of Hay Fever wreak emotional havoc on a houseful of weekend visitors. And in Private Lives, a recently divorced couple find themselves in adjoining hotel rooms while on honeymoon with their new -- and wholly unsuitable -- spouses. Giddy, elegant, and serenely magnanimous in their appreciation of human vice and folly, these plays are Noel Coward at his sophisticated best.

I always have to make it to at least one bookstore on vacation! Chapter One in Idaho was a great stop!

Pickpick

Quick and witty. The gender politics are a bit outdated, but if you like sort of screwball comedies of the same era (1920s-'40s), you should enjoy these plays. Private Lives is probably the strongest of the bunch in terms of character and plot, but Hay Fever was my favorite with all of its zany family.

"We have no reliable guarantee that the after life will be any less exasperating than this one, have we?"

So far I am finding Blithe Spirit to be utterly delightful. There is going to be a seance! (I get to see it performed in a couple weeks, too. So excited! ?)

The local theater group is doing Blithe Spirit for their Halloween play. I remembered I had picked up a free copy back in college, but never got around to reading it. This is getting bumped up in my the queue now, though, because ghosts. 👻
