The Rag and Bone Shop of the Heart
The Rag and Bone Shop of the Heart: Poetry Anthology, A | Robert Bly
3 posts | 4 to read
Robert Bly, James Hillman, and Michael Meade challenge the assumptions of our poetry-deprived society in this powerful collection of more than 400 deeply moving poems from renowned artists including Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Theodore Roethke, Rainer Maria Rilke, Marianne Moore, Thomas Wolfe, Czeslaw Milosz, and Henry David Thoreau.

Very sad news about Robert Bly. I was fortunate enough to attend a few readings while living in Minneapolis. Two in particular stand out: shortly after Tomas Transtromer won the Nobel there was a reading of his work at a large church downtown in the middle of winter. Transtromer wasn't able to be present, but Bly a prominent translator & close friend of Transtromer's, was there. It ended up being standing room. He read & reminisced for 2 hours.👇

vivastory The other memorable event was at the same church, but thankfully during the summer. Poet Jane Hirshfield was there. I was unaware that Bly would be present. Hirshfield had published a book of translations of the works of Mirabai with Bly. They took turns reading from the book. Each adding commentary about the process. The pictured book, co-edited by Bly, is easily one of my favorite poetry anthologies. The scope & quality is hard to beat. 2y

My dad, the poet Robert Bly, getting ready to watch the debate with the company of his beloved Molly. (She scorned both candidates and went to sleep, belly up.). #authors

Sometimes a little poetry goes a long way in the morning. In this book the poems are sorted according to subject matter. I was wary if that would seem a bit pretentious, but it really works. If you're living with someone it's also a nice way to start the day by reading a couple of the poems out loud to each other.

SusanInTiburon I really like this anthology, too. 8y
