1904: Ellen has reluctantly returned to her Gower village from Hoboken, New Jersey, due to her father's frailty. Advent is Ellen's story and the story of a generation of women taking hold of the reins of their own lives, not bowing down to their menfolk, tied to home and hearth in spite of their own desires.
