The One You're With | Lauren K. Denton
8 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
Written in Lauren K. Dentons signature Southern style, The One Youre With tells a story of marriage, choices, and what a good life really looks like. High-school sweethearts Mac and Edie Swan lead a seemingly picture-perfect life in the sleepy-sweet community of Oak Hill, near Mobile, Alabama. Edie is a respected interior designer, Mac is a beloved pediatrician, and they have two great kids and a historic home on tree-lined Linden Avenue. From the outside, the Swan family is the definition of the good life. And life is goodmostly. Until a young woman walks into Macs office one day. A young woman whose very existence threatens all Mac and Edie have built and all they think they know about each other. Nineteen years after a summer apart, with a family and established lives and careers, the past that Mac and Edie thought they left behind has come back to greet them. For the first time, constants in their lives are called into question: their roles as parents, their reputation as upstanding members of the community, and the very foundations of their marriage. As they wade through the upheaval in both their family and professional lives, they must each examine choices they made long ago and chart a new course for their future. In The One You're With, author Lauren K. Denton dives headfirst into a complicated, tangled situation that shakes the foundation of one family's life as they're forced to reckon with both the past and the future. Denton asks the tough questions, and with great sensitivity and intuitiveness, she unfurls an insightful, emotional story of the impact of the decisions a husband and wife in the present day made two decades earlier. A complex, compelling, powerful story about the roads not taken, the seismic shifts that can happen in an instant, and the way that sometimes, the decisions of the past shape the future in ways we couldn't have imagined. Kristin Harmel, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Lost Names and The Forest of Vanishing Stars Lauren Denton is a master not only of Southern fiction, but at capturing the nuance of complicated, messy relationships. This is one of those rare books that I devoured in less than 24 hours, yet didn't want to end. Colleen Oakley, USA TODAYbestselling author of You Were There Too Reading a Lauren K. Denton book is like spending time with treasured friends. With her warmhearted Southern voice, she expertly guides readers along the achingly emotional path of a marriage in trouble in The One Youre With. This poignant story touches on how the choices we make can shape a lifetime, for better or for worse, and serves as a reminder to never take love for granted. Fix yourself a tall glass of iced tea and settle in, because youll have a hard time putting down this lovely, heartfelt novel. The red door on the cover drew my attention to this one and I found it so compelling. This is the story of a marriage where both parties have Very Big Secrets that come to light, and they have to learn how to deal with them or lose their marriage. Nothing really groundbreaking here but I was just so drawn to the way the husband, in particular, was so graceful and honest with his wife and family throughout the entire story. #12Booksof2023

I was drawn to this cover because of this beautiful red door! This is the story of a marriage with a rough patch and it‘s because neither Mac nor Edie were completely honest with one another before they married. Now their pasts have come forth to be dealt with. This rough patch was emotionally intense and I feel like Edie was unfair to Mac in many instances. But I loved the resolution for this family. The story is so Southern and I loved it.

While I liked the ending, I was really put off by the attitudes of many of the characters— like they were stuck in the 50s as far as women were concerned. I liked her book, The Hideaway, much better. Since I finished this book on my #audiowalk, I started Under the Bayou Moon and was intrigued from the first chapter.

Still having the same issues with the attitude towards women in this book, but I‘m loving the setting. It takes place in the area where I live and across the bay, where I go a lot. I‘ve got two hours left. Another lovely day to walk. #audiowalk

KathyWheeler @Suet624 Thank you. My daughter works near these two cemeteries and I was way too early to pick her up, so I took a walk through them. 2y
lynneamch OK, you got me with the setting near Mobile. I'll be near there for a couple weeks in February, so will plan to read it then. Always enjoy your posts. 2y

I‘m having real issues with the hateful judgement and outright misogyny and classicism shown toward many of the female characters in this book, especially the young and pregnant Riley. I hope things end well for her. What a gorgeous day today though! #audiowalk

This is my new walking book. I had to take my daughter to her doctor‘s appointment and discovered this walking area behind the office. I never knew it was there. #audiowalk

This was my only 5⭐️ for #June #12BooksOf2021.

Denton is a favorite Southern author for me because her sense of place and her character development is always spot-on.

This one covered childhood bffs, young love angst, adult misgivings, and second-guessing.

Spanning 17 years (2000-2017), Mac, Edie & Graham had been BFFs since middle school. Mac‘s future is seemingly mapped out for him…med school, marry Edie, have a family. But one fateful summer, doubts and questions arise for all three friends about their relationships with one another and their own needs. And in looking back, they must decide if they made the right choices. I loved this story. Filled with flawed but lovable characters, big 🔻

robinb surprises, tears which are always followed by joy, it‘s a story about the deep bonds of friendship forged in childhood, the angst of young love, the pressures of living up to an ideal and looking back on choices made and possible regrets. 🔻 (edited) 3y
robinb Denton is a favorite of mine because while her stories are “feel good” and sometimes slightly predictable, they are at their heart relatable and real and always leave me looking forward to her next one. Recommended. 5/5⭐️ 3y
