Pickpick

The bleakness of this post-apocalypse story is harrowing in parts, but the horror and brutality is ameliorated by the strong bonds of love between the main characters, shown in their variety by the shifting focus of first-person points of view.
I'm left with a comedown feeling of fragile crystalline sadness that will sit with me for a while. 4⭐
TW for violence and rape, not graphically described but affecting as told in first person.

How was it I had the same thoughts, even after the whole ordeal of risking our lives to escape Korea?... the global calamity had changed neither my thought process nor my concerns...

"I had happened to hear the midnight news in bed. It was a Monday. They said a strange virus was spreading in a distant country, that the virus would mutate with every new vaccine...The next day, news of the virus took wind on every street. But it'll be fine soon. That was what was believed. Because the disaster is in a distant country. Because modern medicine and the government will protect us."

Bookwomble An eerily accurate description of pandemic onset, written two years before covid struck. 2y
merelybookish Eerie indeed! 2y
Bookwomble @merelybookish 🤔 I suppose it's more like it was possible to predict social responses to incipient pandemic, which makes the lack of government preparedness on a global scale the more reprehensible. 2y
merelybookish @Bookwomble True. I know in the US there had been some kind of agency created to study, prepare for a possible pandemic, which was then closed by the Trump administration. So the foresight existed... 2y
Bookwomble @merelybookish Pretty much the same happened here in Britain. Against expert advice, the government decided not to spend money on storing PPE against a possible future need, so when covid hit, we had a shortage of equipment to mitigate against infection, resulting in thousands of deaths 😔 2y

Second attempt at this #Korean dystopia (in translation). A terrible virus has hit the world...

This dystopia, post-apocalyptic novel originally written in Korean is the first queer novel to be translated into English. Written before COVID-19, this one feels so eerily real. Reminiscent of THE ROAD, this one is grim and bleak, but still hopeful.
