Fabulous Zed Watson! The | Basil Sylvester
5 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
The literary scavenger hunt of a lifetime, starring an endlessly endearing non-binary tween Zed Watson loves a few things: their name (which they chose themself!), their big rambunctious family, andoh yeahmonsters. When Zed discovered the mystery surrounding an unpublished novel called The Monsters Castle, they were completely hooked. Now Zed is a member of a small but dedicated legion devoted to finding the long-buried text. When a breakthrough discovery leads Zed to the route that they are sure will take them to the treasure, they know its time for a road trip. And with the help of their shy, flora-loving neighbour, Gabe, and his sister, Sam, a geologist who is driving back to college in Arizona, Zed and company are soon off on a wild adventure following cryptic clues. But its not all fun and games. Gabe doesnt like Zeds snacks, Sam is a bossy driver with total command of the ancient Imprezas stereo, and Zed is often misgendered. Its a good thing they also encounter kind strangers, potato-themed dance-offs and lots and lots of ice cream along the way. If Zed and Gabe can combine their strengths, survive Sams wrath and best the greedy historian whos also hot on the books trail, they just might find the greatest treasure of all. Co-authored by child-parent duo Basil Sylvester and Kevin Sylvester, this is a vibrant and enormous-hearted story about friendship, identity and belonging. It features illustrations by celebrated author and illustrator Kevin Sylvester, and an Own Voices perspective based on Basils experience.

Pickpick

Zed loves monsters and Gabe loves botany. They are nerdy 12-year-olds who are fans of a book that‘s never been finished. Sleuthing clues that might lead to the rest of the book entails a summer road trip with Gabe‘s lesbian older sister, Sam, in a car Zed calls Rusty Raccoon & Sam calls Dolly Carton. Irrepressible, flamboyant, nonbinary Zed is adorable and so is this middle grade novel. #LGBTQ #Nonbinary #Canadian #kidlit

Sam laughed. “You know, Zed, you‘re pretty funny when you‘re not being absolutely melodramatic.”
“It‘s true. I‘m a very flamboyant and well-regarded drama kwing.”
“Drama what?” Gave asked.
“Kwing. It‘s a combo of ‘queen‘ and ‘king,‘ for us theydies and gentlethems.”

“Hold on there, pal,” Sam said. “Unless you‘d like to have a little conversation with my friends Thelma” — she pointed to her left bicep, then her right — “and Louise.”

“My core idea about clothes is that you can never be too flamboyant.”

My passport doesn‘t have my actual gender or my name.
It has my birth name and my assigned gender.
And this is the document I was going to have to hand to an already suspicious and grumpy border guard. How did I know the border guard was going to be grumpy and suspicious? Cross the US border some time.
