Review: I wanted to love this but sadly it just didn‘t work for me. The plot was laughably implausible and the main character—far from fabulous—came off as insufferable. Cont.

Zed loves monsters and Gabe loves botany. They are nerdy 12-year-olds who are fans of a book that‘s never been finished. Sleuthing clues that might lead to the rest of the book entails a summer road trip with Gabe‘s lesbian older sister, Sam, in a car Zed calls Rusty Raccoon & Sam calls Dolly Carton. Irrepressible, flamboyant, nonbinary Zed is adorable and so is this middle grade novel. #LGBTQ #Nonbinary #Canadian #kidlit

Sam laughed. “You know, Zed, you‘re pretty funny when you‘re not being absolutely melodramatic.”
“It‘s true. I‘m a very flamboyant and well-regarded drama kwing.”
“Drama what?” Gave asked.
“Kwing. It‘s a combo of ‘queen‘ and ‘king,‘ for us theydies and gentlethems.”

“Hold on there, pal,” Sam said. “Unless you‘d like to have a little conversation with my friends Thelma” — she pointed to her left bicep, then her right — “and Louise.”

“My core idea about clothes is that you can never be too flamboyant.”

My passport doesn‘t have my actual gender or my name.
