A Goddess in the Stones
A Goddess in the Stones: Travels in Eastern India: Bihar and Orissa | Norman Lewis
1 post | 1 read
An account of the seminal British travel writer's journeys through India. Lewis avoids the easy pleasures of traveling through the hill-forts of Rajasthan, visiting palace hotels and the Taj Mahal. Instead his travels in India begin in the impoverished, overpopulated and corrupt state of Bihar - the scene of a brutal caste war between the untouchables and higher-caste gangsters. From these violent happenings, he heads down the west coast of Bengal and into the highlands of Orissa to testify to the life of the indigenous tribals' who have survived in isolation.

Was struggling to decide whether to DNF this or not. 1/3 through the book and it has no "spark" for me. I am interested in finding out about the tribes in India but this book does not seem to delve too deeply into it so will need to hunt for one that does.
