'Took my breath away. Exquisitely written' Kate Weinberg 'A moving portrait of a family in crisis' Francesca Hornak Because there's never enough time to say goodbye... Sylvia knows that she's running out of time. Very soon, she will exist only in the memories of those who loved her most and the pieces of her life she's left behind. So she begins to write her husband a handbook for when she's gone, somewhere to capture the small moments of ordinary, precious happiness in their married lives. From raising their wild, loving son, to what to give their gentle daughter on her eighteenth birthday - it's everything she should have told him before it was too late. But Sylvia also has a secret, one that she's saved until the very last pages. And it's a moment in her past that could change everything...

“For When I‘m Gone” is an emotional, heartfelt story about human resilience. I really appreciate the personal experience that went into this well written debut – 4 stars.

I read this book in one sitting...I RARELY do that.

Sylvia is a 38 yo, married with 2 young children and is diagnosed with terminal cancer. This is a story of her how-to manual/autobiography left behind for her husband Paul. It‘s told in alternating chapters of Then/Now and the written manual.

This is a story about real, flawed characters told in beautiful, true-to-life prose by a gifted author. These are messy, far from perfect characters ⬇️

robinb who only begin to see what‘s important and valuable in life as one of them is losing their grip on it. I laughed, cried and highlighted more passages than I have in recent times. It wasn‘t a perfect book...the characters could be annoying, and it was perhaps a little long in the telling. But it touched me and I know will remain with me for quite awhile. 5/5⭐️ 4y
robinb Trigger warnings: Other than terminal illness, there is also a stillbirth here and issues with an eating disorder. 4y

Up next (and not quite sure I‘m ready for it with today‘s world) a book that releases in the UK on 9/3 and promises to be a tearjerker. 😔
