"It's a fine example of the craft of detective writing in a period which some regard as the golden age of crime fiction."--The Sunday TelegraphThe death of a traveling salesman appears to be an open and shut case. Studer is confronted with an obvious suspect and a confession to the murder. But nothing is what it seems. Envy, hatred, and the corrosive power of money lie just beneath the surface. Studer's investigation soon splinters the glassy faade of Switzerland's tidy villages and manicured forests.Diagnosed a schizophrenic, addicted to morphine and opium, Friedrich Glauser spent the greater part of his life in psychiatric wards, insane asylums and prison. His acute observations conjure up a world of those at the margins of society.

Finished thumbprint. Not my favourite read of the month, but decent all the same. The author's humanity and compassion shines through.
I read the French translation, and although it‘s perfectly serviceable, I am thinking that the English translation is probably better at rendering the various language registers.

And as feared from @Jari-chan 's post, keeping characters' names straight took a bit of effort, but I got there in the end...

Jari-chan Great you managed the names at the end 😁 and yes, it's a decent read 😊 4mo
Dilara @Jari-chan It helps that I was forewarned 😁- and to anyone else reading, don't be put off: it's really not a big deal (nowhere as hard as Russian novels, for example). It's just that I realised that I will conflate every 3-syllable name that ends with -er or every nickname that ends with -li and this is a book where you have to remember what comes *before* those endings if you want to keep characters apart 😃 4mo
Jari-chan @Dilara Right, Russian names are a totally different level 😁 I wish I was prepared, but if I'm going to reread it I am 😁 4mo

I am starting this #Swiss classic, which I've only discovered last week, thanks to a random YouTube video... I am not usually a fan of crime fiction, but the novel looked really interesting and worth pursuing. We'll see how I fare with it 😁

Jari-chan I wonder how you're going to like it😁 4mo

Another Swiss classic I finally got doen to read. Set in a sleepy and cute village in the canton of Berne it really gets some of those Feeling At Home vibes 😁

Just got confused with the names every now and then 🤨

Dilara If you got confused with the names, what hope do I have? 😨 (I'm about to start on this book) 4mo
Jari-chan @Dilara Maybe you've got no problems at all 😁 4mo
