21: The Story of Roberto Clemente | Wilfred Santiago
5 posts | 2 read
Wilfred Santiagos instant classic 21: The Story of Roberto Clemente is a human drama of courage, faith, and dignity, inspired by the life of the acclaimed Pittsburgh Pirates baseball star who died too young. 21chronicles Clementes life from his early days growing up, through the highlights of his career, capturing the grit of his rise from an impoverished Puerto Rican childhood to the majesty of his performance on the field, and to his fundamental decency off of it. Santiagos inviting style combines realistic attention to detail and expressive cartooning to great effect.

I picked this up because I was familiar with the name Roberto Clemente and thought it'd be interesting to learn more about the man behind the name. I didn't really learn a whole lot (or as much as I thought I would), and baseball is just as boring in graphic novel form as it is in real life (sorry sports fans, I just don't get baseball). I wish this story had more depth and it wasn't so scattered.

readinginthedark I love baseball, but I don't think I could read about it without being bored, just like I can't really watch it on TV. You have to be there for the full experience. 3y
Texreader I agree with @readinginthedark. Baseball is only fun in real life and maybe a book to read. 3y

My last pick for my library's summer reading tic-tac-toe. For a sports related book or movie, I'm going with a graphic novel!

Starting off #24in48 with a late-night graphic novel before I carry myself off to bed. 1 hour down, 23 to go!
