Another Place You've Never Been
Another Place You've Never Been | Rebecca Kauffman
5 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
Rebecca Kauffmans debut novel for fall,Another Place Youve Never Been, is an extraordinary working class novel that takes place in Buffalo, New York. It follows Tracy over the years--beginning as a spunky kid then morphing into a troubled adolescent before trailing her as a struggling adult--along with following her relationships with her absentee father, her religious cousin Shelley, and--later through life--her much younger boyfriend, Greenie. These linked stories are stories about families that fall apart and come back to each other, time and time again. They are about affairs that splinter marriages and alcohol that drives enormous wedges between already strained relationships. They eloquently describe the struggles of paying rent and the difficulties of staying afloat in the restaurant hostessing industry. This novel beautifully describes the difficulties of maintaining friendships over the years, particularly those forged by family members.

I liked these linked stories that all are somehow connected to Marty, sometimes as a main character but sometimes offstage or minor, from small child to adult. Imperfect (but relatable, sometimes) people, small town setting and complicated relationships. I checked this out on a whim from the public library when I was there picking up a hold on a book I have yet to start.

mcipher I like the cover! That angle is so weird, I can't stop looking at it. 7y

ReadingEnvy @cariashley yeah. I mean there are some fishing scenes but I'm not sure I'd call it a major theme or anything 7y

So the strangest thing has happened in that two books I'm reading are so similar to one another that I need to stop reading one ... but which one? Both are so good! Connected stories about a central female character who at least in the beginning are around the same age, rural setting.

Kboltz I choose the left one 7y

This is a book full of characters driven by the certainty that there's just not enough love to go around. In the first chapter, I didn't blame April for wanting this kid out of her house. As the book wore on, I didn't blame the kid for growing up to be the kind of woman she is. Or I did. I blamed them, and then I forgave them, and then I blamed them all over again. But I never doubted them. Not for a minute. A definite pick.
