Natasha: The Biography of Natalie Wood | Suzanne Finstad
3 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
Natalie Wood was always a star; her mother made sure this was true. A superstitious Russian immigrant who claimed to be royalty, Maria had been told by a gypsy, long before little Natasha Zakharenko's birth, that her second child would be famous throughout the world. When the beautiful child with the hypnotic eyes was first placed in Maria's arms, she knew the prophecy would become true and proceeded to do everything in her power everything to make sure of it. Natasha is the haunting story of a vulnerable and talented actress whom many of us felt we knew. We watched her mature on the movie screen before our eyes in Miracle on 34th Street, Rebel Without a Cause, West Side Story, Splendor in the Grass, and on and on. She has been hailed along with Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor as one of the top three female movie stars in the history of film, making her a legend in her own lifetime and beyond. But the story of what Natalie endured, of what her life was like when the doors of the soundstages closed, has long been obscured. Natasha is based on years of exhaustive research into Natalie's turbulent life and mysterious drowning in the dark water that was her greatest fear. Author Suzanne Finstad, a former lawyer, conducted nearly four hundred interviews with Natalie's family, close friends, legendary costars, lovers, film crews, and virtually everyone connected with the investigation of her strange death. Through these firsthand accounts from many who have never spoken publicly before, Finstad has reconstructed a life of emotional abuse and exploitation, of almost unprecedented fame, great loneliness, poignancy, and loss. She sheds an unwavering light on Natalie's complex relationships with James Dean, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Raymond Burr, Warren Beatty, and Robert Wagner and reveals the two lost loves of Natalie's life, whom her controlling mother prevented her from marrying. Finstad tells this beauty's heartbreaking story with sensitivity and grace, revealing a complex and conflicting mix of fragility and strength in a woman who was swept along by forces few could have resisted. Natasha is impossible to put down it is the definitive biography of Natalie Wood that we've long been waiting for.

Just finished listening to this on audio and gosh it was fantastic. I love Rose McGowans voice! My daughter and I watched Rebel a couple of wks ago and I was reminded that I had this biography in my TBR. On audio it was 20 hours!
It is incredibly well researched with the memories and opinions of so many people in Natalies life - yet at the same time Finstad is able to draw a clear narrative line throughout. Natalie had an incredible life ⬇️

Centique a Russian immigrant family, a manipulative mother who pushed her into the arms of older men as a minor, psychological traumas and rebellious periods with other famous teen actors. Then there are her famous marriages to Wagner and her mysterious death in 1981. I didn‘t realise it was so mysterious. Finstad was one of the people that found new evidence⬇️ (edited) 3y
Centique which had the case reopened in 2011. The last 20% of the book is about that night and it is completely fascinating if you like an investigation and clues. This was long but excellent ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3y
Centique If you do get hold of this book make sure it has the additional chapters written in 2018 with the extra evidence. 3y

Reggie Do you think Wagner did it? And what was the evidence? Have you ever seen Imitation of Life. She‘s in the remake and there is this scene where she tells her mom to pretend she doesn‘t know her that breaks my heart. And the next scene the mother dies and she comes home crying hysterically at the funeral. It‘s so emotional and good. 3y
Centique @Reggie I think that maybe she fell in, but the people on the boat definitely failed to either a) help her when they heard her calling or b) mount a rapid response when they discovered her missing. So there‘s some moral culpability if nothing else! Fascinating how a proper investigation just never happened and they were more interested in shielding the “movie stars” from attention. Hey I just looked up that movie and it says Natalie Wood was in ⬇️ 3y
Centique @Reggie the running for that role but it went to Sandra Dee. Sounds amazing though! 3y
Centique @Reggie the extra evidence was the witness accounts from nearby boaties that were never taken, and the true timeline of events that was never drawn up by the police. And things like the coroner thought the body was found with the dinghy and it actually wasn‘t ... lots of stuff like that. 3y
Reggie @Centique oh em gee, I just went to watch a scene on YouTube and that girl looks like her. Wow all this time, lol, I always thought it was her, but it‘s not. 3y
Centique @Reggie or maybe it was the role that the dark haired girl played? Anyhow I‘ve confused us both 😂😂 Have you ever watched Rebel without a Cause? 3y
Reggie @Centique yes, I think the dark haired girl is her. No, I haven‘t. Is it worth the watch? 3y
Centique @Reggie It was one of my favourites as a teen but it‘s dated of course. I told Lucy to keep in mind this was one of the first movies that looked at teenage issues/perspectives as worthy of attention. And she thoroughly enjoyed it so that‘s a good sign. It‘s kind of an archetype of the found family concept in fiction I think. 3y
Centique @Reggie I‘m just thinking you could read the last 20% of the book if you were interested in the case. It would make sense by itself 👍 3y

My #reallifeperson is Natalie Wood. Suzanne Finstad's biography of Natalie remains my favorite biography. I remember speeding through this during a weekend when I was stressed out about a guy (what else? It was 2004) and it definitely helped get my mind off of things. Buying this book while we were browsing at the bookstore was the only good thing that came out of that relationship! 😂 #octphotochallenge #nataliewood #biography ❤️📚🤓📚❤️

I love biographies and old Hollywood so this was a perfect fit for me. It lacks sensationalism & shows a great deal of deference and respect to the great Natalie Wood but isn't afraid to touch upon the more salacious aspects of her life but, in a way that only serves to demonstrate Wood's humanity.

BookJunkie429 Adding this to my list! My mom loved Natalie Wood, so we always watched her movies. Her all time favorite was Splendor in the Grass. ❤️ 8y
Literati86 @BookJunkie429 I LOVE Splendor in the Grass - Natalie Wood & Warren Beatty! But my fave is probably Rebel Without a Cause, I love teen angst (as seen by most of my book choices!) 8y
BookJunkie429 @Literati86 I love that one too, mostly because I was obsessed with Rush Rush, the Paula Abdul video when I was little. I loved seeing the movie that inspired the video. Lol 8y
