The art in this graphic novel is incredibly evocative and deceptively simple. More than anything else, Pittsburgh is in the interior and exterior shots of the houses where Frank and his family and friends lived. I house-hunted in these neighborhoods a few years ago, before buying a neighborhood or two over, and many of these houses are almost unchanged, down to their yellow kitchens.

Pickpick

This #graphicnovel #memoir tells the story of Frank Santoro‘s childhood in Pittsburgh in the 70s, as well as his parents‘ relationship and eventual divorce. As a family story, it‘s interesting but not particularly unique or profound. As a metaphor for this pocket of eastern Pittsburgh, its residents and their changing relationships to their city, I found it much more compelling. I‘ve met many similar people since moving here, albeit decades later.
