Our Only May Amelia
Our Only May Amelia | Jennifer L. Holm
6 posts | 15 read | 7 to read
It isn?t easy being a pioneer in the state of Washington in 1899, but it?s particularly hard when you are the only girl ever born in the new settlement. With seven older brothers and a love of adventure, May Amelia Jackson just can?t seem to abide her family?s insistence that she behave like a Proper Young Lady. She?s sure she could do better if only there were at least one other girl living along the banks of the Nasel River. And now that Mama?s going to have a baby, maybe there?s hope. Inspired by the diaries of her great-aunt, the real May Amelia, first-time novelist Jennifer Holm has given us a beautifully crafted tale of one young girl whose unique spirit captures the courage, humour, passion and depth of the American pioneer experience. ?Newbery Honour Book (USA), 2000 Ages 10+

I started out with the print copy of this and the lack of quotation marks during dialogue drove me absolutely nuts. Once I switched to audio, I enjoyed it much more. May Amelia was such a fun character and it was fun to read about her adventures with all her brothers. I can't believe I missed out on this one when I was a kid - I think it was published when I was in that transition from MG to YA #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime

Gosh, I finally finished this. I would have bailed immediately if this hadn‘t been for #BattleOfTheBooks . There weren‘t any quotation marks around the dialogue. Why? What is the point of that? It was nearly impossible to get through, because of that, and it just felt like a knockoff Little House in the Big Woods. It did get better as it went along, though. 3⭐️

Smrloomis Ugh, no quotation marks 🤦🏻‍♀️ 😕 2y

May Amelia has seven brothers and is sincerely hoping for a sister this time. The daughter of Finnish homesteaders, she has grown up a tomboy in a time of Proper Young Ladies. This is a touching story. A few storylines get lost in the shuffle but I believe this is the first in a series.

#RiotGrams Day 23: Book You've Owned Longest

This was the first book I bought with my own money, so it counts. I still love, love, love it.
