Selected Tales of the Brothers Grimm
Selected Tales of the Brothers Grimm | Brothers Grimm
4 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
This new edition of the beloved tales of the Brothers Grimm selected, translated and edited by Peter Wortsman - is drawn from the 1857 edition of the German original, the last edition reviewed and approved by the Brothers in their lifetime. Over the years, the Brothers' enigmatic narratives have been sanitized by Disney and children's book editors for modern consumption; this indispensable edition restores their sting and vigor to the original prose. In Wortsmans words, his translation is a return to "a tincture of concentrated man-eating ogre and ground hag tooth, diluted in blood, sweat and tears, as a potent vaccine against the crippling effects of fear and fury." These fortifying imaginative vaccines are accompanied by twenty-four full-color illustrations by Haitian artists, including Edouard Duval-Carri, Pascale Monnin, and Franktienne. Edwidge Danticat observes that many Haitian painters bring "forth another canvas beneath the one we see." These works imaginative scope, vitality, and evocation of the unconscious open deep channels between the two traditions, shedding new light and shadow on the classic tales. From the Trade Paperback edition.

#BookCoverChallenge
Day 116.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

As a child, when I first saw #IntoTheWoods, my favorite part to act out was the gory “cut off your toe” bit at the end of Act I. I always assumed that was something Sondheim added...lo and behold it was pure Grimm all along. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️🦶🏻 “And when you‘re his bride you‘ll have such a life you‘ll never need to walk!” “And only one prick, it‘s my thing about blood!”

“And she took one look at my beautiful garden and told your father what she wanted more than anyyyyythhhhing in the world was greens, greens, and nothing but greens, parsley, peppers, cabbages & celery, asparagus & watercress & fiddlefern & lettuce. He said alright but it wasn‘t quite because I caught him in the autumn in my garden one night....” Witches Rap, #IntoTheWoods #sondheim

I‘m the biggest nerd for Sondheim‘s Into the Woods...I‘ve always wanted to dive deeper into Grimm‘s fairytales. This one is...creepy. (But aren‘t they all? 🧟‍♀️)
