Blackwater Lake
Blackwater Lake: A Psychological Suspense Novella | Maggie James
3 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
Matthew Stanyer fears the worst when he reports his parents missing. His father, Joseph Stanyer, has been struggling to cope with his wife Evie, whose dementia is rapidly worsening. When their bodies are found close to Blackwater Lake, a local beauty spot, the inquest rules the deaths as a murder-suicide. A conclusion that's supported by the note Joseph leaves for his son. Grief-stricken, Matthew begins to clear his parents' house of decades of compulsive hoarding, only to discover the dark enigmas hidden within its walls. Ones that lead Matthew to ask: why did his father choose Blackwater Lake to end his life? What other secrets do its waters conceal? A short (25,000-word) novella, Blackwater Lake examines how burying the past can damage the future.

I‘ve gone from a book I felt was way too long to one that I want to be longer! This short novella is a taut look at the effects of trauma, when the death of Matthew‘s parents lead him to uncover a 35-year-old secret.

Matthew, only son of Evie and Joe Stanyer, had distanced himself from his parents and childhood home. He had chosen to stay away because his parents' home was filled with stuff, way too much stuff. Evie and Joe had become hoarders. As the long hidden body of a missing and murdered young woman rose to the surface of Blackwater Lake, many long buried truths also rose to the surface. Filled with secrets and stuff, a great read with a surprise ending.

An honest & compassionate look at mental illness, hoarding, dementia, & grief, with a nice mystery threading through it. The story looks at how the hoarding habits of one young man's parents affected him, & the legacy it left him.
