Besides the impactful moral and political message, the main narrative of Zahra's Paradise is one of family and love. As a mother and son search desperately for their lost relative, the corruption of their country comes into stark focus, but so does the courage of its people.

Highly recommended, with the warning that rape is brought up quite graphically on at least one occasion.

UrsulaMonarch Looking forward to reading! Thanks for the warning 7y
MoniqueChristine I hope you find it as moving as I did! :) 7y

'Of all the Islamic Republic's enemies, Omar Khayyam is the most dangerous: A hacker before his time. His poetry is Iran's real constitution. God's love flows through the cup of his verse. His code and calendars slit and slice through the hypocrisy that cloaks our sovereigns in tombs of piety.'

UrsulaMonarch Wow! Looks amazing, thanks for posting! 7y

There are more than a few moments in this book that are hard to read. So much evil in the world ... 😰

Recommended to me by a couple of my students. Really powerful story from Iran of oppression and resistance. A great graphic novel so far.

Good historical fiction graphic novel about Mehdi a protester that vanished in the protests after the 2009 elections in Iran. Great illustration on a corrupt government machine. The story develops and each chapter covers an area of life.

This graphic novel sheds so much light on recent events in Iran. The reader will need some basic understanding of Islamic culture and terms before reading this one though.
