Kate and the Beanstalk
Kate and the Beanstalk: with audio recording | Mary Pope Osborne
2 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum'un, I smell the blood of an Englishwoman. Be she alive or be she dead, I'll grind her bones to make my bread. Mary Pope Osborne's funny, magical retelling of the favorite tale and Giselle Potter's enchanting illustrations feature a new and inspiring heroine named Kate for today's audience. Readers will cheer on this resourceful, gutsy girl as she outsmarts the famously greedy giant.

This TL book is a hilarious spin on the traditional Jack and the Beanstalk. Similar to Jack, there is still a singing harp, golden chicken/eggs, magic beans and climbing of the beanstalk. Kate is smart, resourceful, and fearless as she outsmarts the giant and returns all of the stolen belongings to the magic fairy in disguise. In the end, she learns that her family lived in the castle before the giant and the items actually belong to them!

Kyleigh_J This book is FANTASTIC for a S and is a great feminist spin on the original! This S is absolutely phenomenal and should be shared with a class so that they can truly enjoy this story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiQRuz0kReU She is so animated, her props are hilarious, and the S is enjoyable for all. UDL 7.3 Minimize threats and distractions is satisfied as the storyteller actively keeps the students engaged by using props, intonation, voices, 4y
Kyleigh_J and redirection if necessary. EL 17 Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions is satisfied. The storyteller uses a variety of movements and facial expressions to depict what the characters of the story are doing and how they are feeling. #UCFLAE3414SP20 (edited) 4y
DrSpalding I am adding this book to my stack. This would make an excellent storytelling and I like how you have described this with a feminist spin. Great video. 4y

A retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk, featuring Kate as the heroine, written by the same author of The Magic Treehouse series, a family favorite. When I cracked open the book, i realized I‘ve read this before, when Maya was younger! it‘s a charming retelling.
