Cherishing the special broom resting above her hearth for its representation of the slave heritage that once forbade legal marriages, Ellen prepares for her parents' triumphant registry at a Reconstruction-era courthouse as lawful husband and wife and proudly carries the broom so that they can repeat a cultural wedding tradition.

A moving story of one girl‘s parents‘ journey from jumping the broom during slavery to becoming legally married to recognizing both rituals. Bright, warm illustrations convey the important story well. Due to the amount of text per page, and the one page depicting the sadness of a couple being separated to be sold during slavery, I recommend this for first grade. #5stars #family #slavery #diversebooks

This is a sweet story about a young girl who learns about the significance of 🧹 weddings. It takes place in the Reconstruction era, a period in history I rarely see covered in picture books. Warm and uplifting, I really liked this one!
