The book of human skin is a large volume with many pages of villainy writ upon it. There are people who are a disease, you know. 13 May, 1784, Venice: Minguillo Fasan, heir to the decaying, gothic Palazzo Espagnol, is born. Yet Minguillo is no ordinary child: he is strange, devious and all those who come near him are fearful. Twelve years later Minguillo is faced with an unexpected threat to his inheritance: a newborn sister, Marcella. His untempered jealousy will condemn his sister to a series of fates as a cripple, a madwoman and a nun. But in his insatiable quest to destroy her, he may have underestimated his sister's ferocious determination, and her unlikely allies who will go to extraordinary lengths to save her...

DNF at 100 pages

100 pages of the torture and degradation of a young girl by a monstrous older brother is enough. It‘s explicit and brutal and partly told from the perspective of the brother and I can‘t stand to be in his head any longer. I am sure that eventually the torture of the young girl will stop and that she will overcome and her brother will be defeated but I just can‘t get there. Heard great things about this book but it‘s not for me.

Here‘s a little game of “Spot the Disturbing Title Juxtaposition” for you. Discovered this on the Honesty Bookshop shelves outside Hay Castle (sadly closed and completely covered in scaffolding) during my recent Hay-on-Wye trip. 😳😧😱😖

Pickpick

An emotional rollercoaster of a book, you might not like the emotions but one of the best books I've read, in my opinion it's not a well known book outside of book clubs etc. Unfortunately. I can't recommend it enough.
Michelle Lovric takes you on a journey you won't forget quickly.
