#MayMovieMagic

(Day 6 - #DontStopMeNow)

*I get very confused trying to follow lawn bowls, or cricket, or whatever (are those the same game?). Anyway, when I read about the movie (“Blackball”), I thought I‘d celebrate all of the black sports balls that I could think of. Original, right? Well, maybe I should instead have honored the more recent movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” . . . still, I wish I understood cricket 🏏. 😊

CarolynM @gradcat Sacrilege! Cricket is nothing like lawn bowls! It's impossible to explain in this forum. Come visit me in Australia one summer for an immersion experience😂 6y
audraelizabeth I believe cricket is more similair to baseball. 6y
Cinfhen Where I live in Israel we have a lot of former residents of South Africa & there is a lawn bowls club down the street. Apparently lawn bowls is SA and cricket is more of an Australian sport 🤷🏼‍♀️ true @CarolynM ??!?! (edited) 6y

CarolynM @Cinfhen I can't comment on lawn bowls in South Africa, but my understanding is that they're as serious about cricket as we are. A lot of people play lawn bowls here, but it's not much of a spectator sport (although there's a tournament that's starting to get some traction, my daughter is very keen on it) 6y
Cinfhen I‘m still confused about American “Football “🏈 and world wide “Football” ⚽️ @CarolynM 6y
CarolynM @Cinfhen And in Australia "football" means something else again? 6y
CarolynM @audraelizabeth Well, in so far as you use a bat to hit a ball... 6y
audraelizabeth True. My dad lived in australia for awhile and played cricket. What does football mean in australia? 6y
RohitSawant Don't know much about lawn bowls, but I can say they're nothing alike as @CarolynM said! Cricket is practically a religion in my corner of the world. I've never been drawn to it, or any other sport, for that matter 😄 6y
CarolynM @audraelizabeth Mostly it means Australian Rules Football which is a completely different game but in Queensland and New South Wales it might mean Rugby League (different again). 6y
Centique Oh man I‘m laughing at this @CarolynM we must be the only cricket fans here! 😂 I even know what Aussie Rules is (thanks to my nephew who is a die hard magpies supporter - they‘re the maddest ones right?) 6y
Cinfhen Really?!?!?! @CarolynM what shape is an Australian football?!?!!?! 🤣🤣😂 6y
CarolynM @Centique There's also @Andrew65 in the UK - I've had some good cricket chats with him. And yes, Collingwood supporters are definitely the worst, although most Victorians are pretty obsessed. I confess to having been an Aussie Rules fan as a teenager in Adelaide, but I converted to the one true religion in 1984 (my God that Wallaby team was good) 6y
CarolynM @Cinfhen Similar to an American football but less pointy and bigger and heavier. 6y
Andrew65 @Centique @CarolynM Yes I love my cricket too and always have, going back to my childhood days watching Botham, Gower, Gooch, Willis, etc... Looking forward to the World Cup coming up. Feel we have a good chance for once, but knowing us we will shout ourselves in the foot. Watched a lot of the highlights of Australia over the Winter, they look to have grown in confidence and look in good form. Won‘t be easy for Warner and Smith Coming back.👇 6y
Andrew65 👆Likely to get some grief from the crowd, but looking at the IPL whatever you think about Warner (and a lot of questions there), he is in great form! Wish could say the same about Ben Stokes, not the same since his trouble off the pitch. (edited) 6y
CarolynM @Andrew65 There's quite a bit of talking up of the Australian team here, but I'm not buying it. I think the Indians are the team to beat. Sorry we've taken over your post like this @gradcat 😘 6y
Andrew65 @CarolynM @gradcat From Lawn Bowls to the World Cup. 😂 I think I see the Winner coming from England, Australia, India or Pakistan. England have a very strong team but are liable to have an off performance, if that happens in the Knockout stages they are history. 6y
Crazeedi The best conversation I've read in a while! Now I have to educate myself on these sports I'm not familiar with, as I'm a sports lover! I love every America sport but I have to go international now! @CarolynM @Andrew65 @Cinfhen @Centique 6y
Crazeedi And good morning @gradcat !!😍 6y
CarolynM @Crazeedi It's fun to watch sports! Hope you get enjoyment out of some of these🙂 6y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Cricket‘s the way to go. 😂 If you like fast entertainment try to take in the Indian Premier League (IPL) play-offs and finals over the next week or so. Then later this month the Cricket World Cup. 👍😍 @CarolynM 6y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 @CarolynM thanks for info, I will definitely check out, interested to learn about! 6y
gradcat @Crazeedi Hi lady! I‘ve been a bit late catching up on my post responses, etc. It was a bit of an education, those posts, right? 😂 Also, I hope you are doing well—how‘s that hip replacement? (edited) 6y
gradcat @CarolynM @audraelizabeth @Cinfhen @rohit-sawant @Centique @Andrew65 Thanks for the education, guys...I always thought those cricket games could last for hours and hours...if so, how can you sit and watch them for so long? I never understood that!! 🏏 😂 6y
CarolynM @gradcat Test cricket lasts 5 days if you're lucky - watching it is a form of meditation🙂 There is also one-day cricket (self explanatory) which used to feel fast and exciting until Twenty20 cricket came along. That only last about 4 hours. And if you play in your back yard it's up to you 6y
gradcat @CarolynM Oh, wow! I didn‘t know there were so many versions. I read loads of books with cricket matches (always in the background—I don‘t read books about cricket, obs!), and I‘m always fascinated by it. The books make is sound kind of like polo—a sport for the gentry—with gorgeous green lawns and bleach white uniforms! How‘s that...did I get it right? 😂 6y
CarolynM @gradcat Well, sort of. In the past, particularly in England, it was played by the leisured classes, although they were usually happy for others to help make up the village team. I'm not sure quite what the situation is now over there ( @Andrew65 ?) but here in Australia it very much a sport for the masses. Whites are only for first class matches and grade games, one day and twenty20 games are played in coloured uniforms. (edited) 6y
gradcat @CarolynM Thanks for the education. I have to admit to trying to read about it on Wikipedia several times (I‘m such an information nerd!) after reading certain books, but I haven‘t really retained much of it. One thing I do know: it‘s not really like American baseball. I‘m a huge fan of baseball, and I think they‘re comparable only in the broadest sense. ⚾️ ♥️🏏 6y
