I'm happy to have finally read this classic! Did I like it? While I really enjoyed the writing style, the 40 first pages were very boring, and honestly not very useful for the plot. The story by itself was fine, but it's not a classic that will leave a mark for me... My favorite character is no doubt Pearl.

monalyisha I read this in high school. I remember really feeling like I was being beaten over the head with the symbolism...like Hawthorne didn‘t quite trust his readers enough to get it on their own. I don‘t know if I‘d still feel that way today. Oh, well. I do like his short stories! 5y
Adventures-of-a-French-Reader @monalyisha I read it for pleasure, it's probably different when you read it for school... I've read only one of his short stories, the one about the water pump (by the way referenced in the Scarlet Letter), and I remember that I really enjoyed it. Reading his short stories would be a great idea ;) 5y

I have been wanting to read and reread some Classics. I am going to challenge myself to read at least 4 classics this year. I would love to read more if I had more reading time. What are your favorite Classic reads?
