The Dragon Masters | 
Jo Walton's Hugos history made me want to reread a couple of Vernor Vinge's novels, so I dug through my discards shelf to see if I'd passed them on yet. They're gone, alas, but I did find another Hugo-winner I forgot I had--probably because it should've been in La TBR instead.
The cover lies; this won Best Short Fiction, not Best Novel. It's part of an Ace Double with THE FIVE GOLD BANDS, and I think my dad gave it to me.

xicanti @JoRead my early brushes with classic SF left me with the impression the whole genre was ideas-over-characters, so I've only been reading it for ten years, and most of what I've read is pretty recent. I've got a lot of gaps to fill as I search for the more character-centric older stuff (or the stuff that's so cool I don't mind flat characterization). 6y
