The Size of the Truth | Andrew Smith
5 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
A boy who spent three days trapped in a well tries to overcome his PTSD and claustrophobia so he can fulfill his dream of becoming a famous chef in this charming novel that is Andrew Smiths first foray into middle grade storytelling. When he was four years old, Sam Abernathy was trapped at the bottom of a well for three days, where he was teased by a smart-aleck armadillo named Bartleby. Since then, his parents plan every move he makes. But Sam doesnt like their plans. He doesnt want to go to MIT. And he doesnt want to skip two grades, being stuck in the eighth grade as an eleven-year-old with James Jenkins, the boy hes sure pushed him into the well in the first place. He wants to be a chef. And hes going to start by entering the first annual Blue Creek Days Colonel Jenkins Macaroni and Cheese Cook-Off. That is, if he can survive eighth grade, and figure out the size of the truth that has slipped Sams memory for seven years.

Smith‘s first middle grade book is exactly what you‘d expect—a deceptively simple story of childhood that holds unexpected emotional depth. As always, there is weirdness. Also, characters dealing with expectations, knowing who they are, friendship (Smith writes male friendships better than just about anyone), triumph, survival, bullying, perception, & the dreaded middle school dance. It‘s about Sam but I❤️James Jenkins (& want more). Recommended.

If you‘ve read Stand-Off, you‘ll recognize the protagonist. Sam Abernathy gets his own book!

Ohhh, super excited about this one! We first met Sam Abernathy in Stand-Off, the sequel to Winger, & now he gets his own book!!! So, Sam‘s story...he spent three days trapped in a well when he was 4 years old. He wants to be a chef & if he can overcome his PTSD, claustrophobia, & his parents who have a different life plan mapped out for him, he just might make it. Smith‘s first middle grade book sounds like a good one. Out 3/26/19. ❤️the cover!
