Sultana's Dream
Sultana's Dream: And Selections from The Secluded Ones | Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain
7 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
Sultanas Dream, first published in 1905 in a Madras English newspaper, is a witty feminist utopiaa tale of reverse purdah that posits a world in which men are confined indoors and women have taken over the public sphere, ending a war nonviolently and restoring health and beauty to the world. "The Secluded Ones" is a selection of short sketches, first published in Bengali newspapers, illuminating the cruel and comic realities of life in purdah.

One of the early feminist utopia SFF shorts.

Extremely illuminative. The atobiographical excerpts are also extemely good as is the nonfiction background information essays.

A great feminist utopian short story set in India. I found this gem on #SerialReader

For reading some of the early “feminist” stories from women of European heritage, I found this short story written in 1905 by a Muslim woman reversing the gender roles very interesting.

* Recommended if you enjoyed Angel Island by Inez Haynes Irwin or Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds interesting! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage It was, and only 2 issues. 5y

Bookwomble It's also collected in the tagged book, an anthology of Victorian/Edwardian sci-fi stories by women authors. I'd recommended it and it's companion volumes, The Darker Sex (horror/macabre), and Sisters in Crime (detective). 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Bookwomble That sounds excellent! I‘ll definitely look for it! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I bet @BarbaraTheBibliophage would be interested in that book to. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Bookwomble I‘m definitely interesting in finding more from other POV‘s. This one and Woman at Point Zero are two that I‘ve stumbled across so far. Both polar opposites too, but great women fiction. 5y

This is a different picture of first wave feminism than what we normally see, as well as a different picture of Indian women from a hundred years ago than what we normally see. Did this story change your image of either? #litereads

Our current #litereads pick has some cool sci-fi technology in the utopian world of Ladyland, and we wanna know what you think.

Libby1 I thought this was a little gem. 6y
elizabethlk @Libby1 I agree. I think it is underrated for what it is. The technology is still mindblowing to think someone in 1905 would dream it up. The sense of humor is pretty great too. I hope #litereads encourages more people to read it. 6y
mhillis This story was so interesting and I was intrigued by the idea of the water balloon. Thanks for recommending it! 6y
elizabethlk @mhillis I'm glad you enjoyed it! The water balloon and solar power were some of my favourite aspects! 6y
