Half-Witch
Half-Witch: a novel | John Schoffstall
7 posts | 4 read | 22 to read
In the world in which Lizbet Lenz lives, the sun still goes around the earth, God speaks directly to his worshippers, goblins haunt every cellar and witches lurk in the forests. Disaster strikes when Lizbet's father Gerhard, a charming scoundrel, is thrown into a dungeon by the tyrant Hengest Wolftrow. To free him, Lizbet must cross the Montagnes du Monde, globe-girdling mountains that reach to the sky, a journey no one has ever survived, and retrieve a mysterious book. Lizbet is desperate, and the only one who can help her is the unpleasant and sarcastic witch girl Strix. As the two girls journey through the mountains and into the lands of wonder beyond, on the run from goblins, powerful witches, and human criminals, Lizbet discovers, to her horror, that Strix's magic is turning Lizbet into a witch, too. Meanwhile, a revolution in Heaven is brewing.

The book cover pulled me in bc it reminds me of Mio My Son by Astrid Lindgren. Two children on a rescue adventure with a horse. The bottom left is the edition I own & the right both illustrated by Ilon Wikland. The lower middle is an illustration by Johan Egerkrans for a new edition.
I hope Half-Witch brings me joy like Mio did. Has anyone ever seen the movie The Land of Faraway? It‘s based on Mio My Son.

Top 10 books of 2018

#2

Numbers one and two are really a toss up on this list. I adored every moment of this book. A perfect fairy tale fantasy story for fans of The Neverending Story and The Princess and the Goblin, this is a totally unique, deep, and sweet story. Highly highly recommended. Seriously, what every you‘re doing right now, drop it and go find this book.

Wow, this was excellent! Clever, driven heroine with engaging female friendship. Setting was in a fantasy Holy Roman Empire and some of the religion bits weren't to my taste, but they suited the character and were well-written.

(I would definitely read a sequel!)

Marketed as middle grade, but I think best suited for the mature end of that range.

That's as good enough a description of friendship as any, I suppose.

If any witches want to escape, take the second path and mind the waterfall!
