A lyrical and moving Polish family saga set against the turbulent backdrop of twentieth-century Europe Lala has lived a dazzling life. Born in Poland just after the First World War and brought up to be a perfect example of her class and generation tolerant, selfless and brave Lala is an independent woman who has survived some of the most turbulent events of her times. As she senses the first signs of dementia, she battles to keep her memories alive through her stories, telling her grandson tales of a life filled with love, betrayal and extraordinary acts of courage. Sweeping from nineteenth-century Kiev to modern-day Poland, this enthralling family saga is a celebration of a beautiful life well lived.

A beautiful book & tribute to Dehnel‘s grandmother Lala. It reads like a memoir of her life in Poland including WW2. The writing is delightful - light, whimsical & poetic. He captures Lala beautifully: a charming woman - happy, strong-willed w a sense of mischief. A confusing number of characters - it‘s more a creative memoir than novel - but I forgave it because of the tone: like having tea with a poet & his iconic grandmother. Teffi fans will ❤️

Abailliekaras @batsy it‘s the most glorious cover! I think the book lives up to it, in a whimsical, idiosyncratic way. 5y

I‘ve just started this. It‘s delightful so far; his tone is charming, friendly and with gentle humour - it reminds me of Teffi‘s stories. There is a poignant undertone - things lost in war & upheaval - but a light comic touch. It crosses into memoir (I think it‘s his actual family) but perhaps he had to imagine so much much of the past that it evolved into a novel? A little confusing - I‘m going with it at the moment. Beautiful writing too.

Mehso-so

Almost 3 hours in to #24in48 (I think I am on the 6 hour plan—maybe I can try for 8?!) and I have finished my second goal book.
I‘m struggling to review this. Is it a memoir/bio of the author‘s grandmother‘s life in 20th century Poland (if so it‘s a pick!)? Or is it a fictitious family saga featuring the author as a character (as a historian and genealogist this just pisses me off). I‘ve researched and can‘t figure it out. #intranslation #Poland

I‘m awake! Read about an hour and a half last night, and finished my first goal (previously started) book. Aiming to finish this one next, I have just over 80 pages to go. #24in48 #arc
