The Aspern Papers
The Aspern Papers | Henry James

How Far Would You Go Just To Nurture Your Obsession? “That was originally what I had loved him for: that at a period when our native land was nude and crude and provincial, when the famous 'atmosphere' it is supposed to lack was not even missed, when literature was lonely there and art and form akmost impossible, he had found the means to live and write like one of the first; to be free and general and not at all afraid; to feel, understand, and express everything.” - Henry James, The Aspern Papers An anonymous narrator arrives in Venice to retrieve Jeffrey Aspern’s - an American poet and his idol - love letters. There he finds Juliana Bordereau and his aging niece who may or may not have the letters in question. To convince Juliana, the narrator tries to seduce the niece, Miss Tita but is he willing to pay the price?

Littens, I could use your advice!

This year I'm doing an alpha challenge (author last name) based on the books I own. This week is "J". These are my oldest TBRs, and I'm having a hard time deciding which one I should pick up first.

What do you think? Where should I start?

merelybookish If it were me, I'd probably pick 7y
CrowCAH Secret Diaries of Charlotte Bronte 7y
Suet624 Well I like St Francis and I like the author, but I imagine it might be a bit dry. 7y

LauraBrook @merelybookish @CrowCAH Looks like that's the winner! @Suet624 I like St Francis, have never read anything by the author before, but in flipping through and reading a few paragraphs, it does seem a little dry. I'll shelve it downstairs in my "wrong timing" case and try again in a couple of years. 7y
EvieBee Question: Belle Du Jour as in the French film from the 60s?! 7y
LauraBrook @EvieBee84 No, as in the author who wrote Secret Diary of a Call Girl - she's probably in her 30s/40s now, an escort (?) living in London. Was also a pretty good TV series with Billie Piper a few years ago. (B de J is her nom de plume) 7y
