Revolutionary Characters
Revolutionary Characters: What Made the Founders Different | Gordon S. Wood
5 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
In this brilliantly illuminating group portrait of the men who came to be known as the Founding Fathers, the incomparable Gordon Wood has written a book that seriously asks, "What made these men great?" and shows us, among many other things, just how much character did in fact matter. The life of eachWashington, Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, Hamilton, Madison, Paineis presented individually as well as collectively, but the thread that binds these portraits together is the idea of character as a lived reality. They were members of the first generation in history that was self-consciously self-made men who understood that the arc of lives, as of nations, is one of moral progress. From the Trade Paperback edition.

The topic was American Literature and the Constitution. I could not resist tuning in to this fascinating Webinar sponsored by The National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Three women professors/authors were on the panel. Founders included popular novels in their reading. Everything from Don Quixote to Huckleberry Finn. Added many titles to my massive TBR.Fascinating!
You can watch the recording at constitutioncenter.org in Town Hall Video.

Nute Thanks for the link! I‘m checking it out now. 3y
DivineDiana @Nute You‘re welcome! I hope you find it as fascinating as I did. 📚 3y

Author provides backgrounds on several of the Founding Fathers of America, and discusses how our views of them can change over time. He also touches on how they viewed each other as well. I found this very readable.

ValerieAndBooks @DivineDiana thanks 😊 ! I used to do a lot of quilting until it got too expensive and also a lack of time. But I have a few unfinished projects that I plan to get back into now, that the nest will be empty soon with the last one going off to college! 5y
DivineDiana Sounds like a good plan! 👏🏻 5y

Confession: when I go down to the pool, I actually bring down more than one book 😂. I think today I will try reading Shirley first.

But first I must scoop out those leaves!!

(Also: my book sleeves were made by my mom 💖)

Leftcoastzen I like a book for every mood! 5y
cathysaid I call that smart planning. 🤓 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Leftcoastzen agree!! Sometimes it actually comes down to whatever font is easiest to read in the outdoor light!! 5y
ValerieAndBooks @cathysaid yes, especially since there‘s a gazillion steps between the house and the pool 😂! 5y
