Mehso-so

I feel like I should APPRECIATE this book, at least. It‘s subtle, it deals with marital strife in a way most SFF avoids, and I‘m sure it‘s packed with little details that‘ll impact the wider series.

But y‘all, I found it SUCH A SLOG. Brust‘s subtlety shut me out at the start and I struggled to connect as the story barrelled along. There were enjoyable moments, sure, but I wouldn‘t have fought my way through to them if this weren‘t in a series.

Still plugging along, with garlic-parmesan popcorn to perk things up.

I dunno if I‘ll finish this tonight. I‘ve got 70 pages left and while it‘s improved, I‘m mostly reading it because it‘s part of a series I‘ve been collecting for ages based on Jo Walton‘s rec and the fact I enjoyed the first two books. Otherwise, I‘d have bailed fast and hard.

I‘ll stick with it until the sun goes down, then take a TV break.

Hanging out at home with my favourite reading buddy.

Maybe complaining about this book made it better? I like it a lot more at page 60 than I did at page 30, though I still don‘t think it‘ll be my top Vlad Taltos novel.

Earlier, I ate a Nanaimo Bar McFlurry and took myself off to a bench so‘s I could read more of TECKLA.

Which, to be honest, didn‘t go well. I‘m 33 pages in and I‘m so. Frickin. BORED. There‘s all this stuff happening between the lines, but even with the first two books under my belt I don‘t feel enough of an investment to root out what everything MEANS. It took me a small eternity to get through even 33 pages .

Maybe I‘ll jump to Book 4.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Oh please do tell me what a Nanaimo Bar is. 5y
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Americans do have them too, but they‘re called something different down there and I can never remember the name. (Someone told me it was New York Slice, but that proved untrue.) They‘re a bar cookie consisting of a nubbly chocolate & coconut base topped with a firm custard and finished with a solid chocolate layer. VERY tasty. 5y
Bookish.SAM Oh my!! There are Nanaimo bar Mcflurries?!? Amazing! I haven‘t had a Nanaimo bar in years (edited) 5y

xicanti @Bookish.SAM they‘re so good! I think they use hot fudge sauce in place of the chocolate topping, and there‘s tons of nubbly, crumbled Nanaimo bar base mixed in. I didn‘t spot any custard so maybe they expect the ice cream to stand in for that. 5y
Bookish.SAM Looks like I‘ll have to go try to hunt one down ASAP. Hopefully they have them in my area. 5y

Some mornings demand a hot breakfast. There were originally three pieces of bacon, but I ate one while the egg cooked.

Fingers crossed I get some serious time with this book today. It‘s the last of my May Must-Reads and I really thought this was the first month where I‘d fail to knock all four titles off the list. I‘ll definitely finish it in time, but I want to get through it FAST so I can squeeze in one more thing I‘ve been eyeing.

Drocchio03 Yum! Happy reading! 5y
