nakamowin'sa for the seasons | Rita Bouvier
2 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
Rita Bouviers third collection of poetry is a response to the highs and lows of life and represents an attempt at restoring order through embracing others, reconciling the traumas caused by the deep scars of history, and soaring beyond lifes awkward and painful moments in order to live joyfully. Inspired by the metaphor of a voyageur sustained by song on his journeys up and down the rivers of Northwest Saskatchewan, these wordsongs for the seasons draw heavily on images from nature as well as the joys, heartaches and transgressions Bouvier has witnessed and experienced as a Mtis woman. Using imagery strongly connected to the natural environment, Bouvier evokes earths regeneration through the seasons as inspiration for moving forward.

This collection by Saskatoon Mėtis poet Rita Bouvier depicts personal relationships, nature, and indigenous Canadian historical injustice. I was particularly interested in the latter topic; those poems sometimes worked. But sadly, I found little energy, surprise, or much of anything in the way of interesting images here. They were leaden with cliché, and the more personal ones barely rose above the dull sentimentality of a Hallmark card greeting.

This is a book of poetry by an indigenous Canadian writer from my home province of Saskatchewan, focused primarily on the near-genocidal injustice Canada perpetrated on her people via the residential schools. I was shocked, SHOCKED, that Amazon Japan had this in stock in their Tokyo warehouse (i.e., not via a 3rd-party seller)!

@Lindy I hope you are sitting down when you see I acquired a book of poetry! Have you heard of her?

Lindy Congratulations on purchasing poetry! I haven't heard of Bouvier before. Her work sounds like something I would like and I hope you do too. 😀 7y
