The Pride of Chanur
The Pride of Chanur | C. J. Cherryh
5 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
No one at Meetpoint Station had ever seen a creature like the Outsider. Naked-hided, blunt toothed and blunt-fingered, Tully was the sole surviving member of his company of humans?a communicative, spacefaring species hitherto unknown?and he was a prisoner of his discoverers and captors?the sadistic, treacherous kif?until his escape onto the hani ship The Pride of Chanur. Little did he know when he threw himself upon the mercy of The Pride and her crew that he put the entire hani species in jeopardy and imperiled the peace of the Compact itself... for the information this fugitive held could be the ruin or glory of any of the species at Meetpoint Station.

Great concept, terrible execution. Half the time I didn't understand what was happening. The various aliens were not described at all other than brief bits long after they were introduced. The syntax of the Chanur people was inconsistent. The various political storylines were confusing. It had so much potential but, for me, missed the mark. I only finished it (the 1st story) to see what happened to the human refugee. Glad it wasn't a cliffhanger.

bookishbitch I did enjoy the female driven society of the Chanur, and some of the character development. I have read other works by this author and really enjoyed them so I'm unsure why this was such a miss. 2mo

I've begun the 1st book in this series on my kindle. I do have this omnibus though. The 1st book was published in 1981. It's good so far. This author has written a LOT of books and was quite popular in her day so I have high expectations.

Day 2 of #20Series20Days: Chanur by C.J. Cherryh

I'm told that all of C.J. Cherryh's Alliance/Union Universe series is masterful, but the only part I can personally attest to is the Chanur subseries, which pushes every one of my buttons: space opera, anthropology, politics, intrigue, action, ... it's brilliant, y'all, and satisfying in every way. And those Michael Whelan covers? Take my money NOW.

Andrew65 Looks worth exploring. 4y
swynn @Andrew65 Hope you like it! Fair warning: the first book is a stand-alone, but if you like it well enough to start Book 2, then you'd better plan to move right on to books 3 & 4, because cliffhangers. 4y
Andrew65 @swynn Thanks for the information. 4y

What a difference 36 years makes in our perception of refugees. I impulsively re-read this the other night, and like all good literature, it spoke to me differently than it did the first time I read it. #scifi
