Dance On My Grave | Aidan Chambers
1 post | 3 read | 1 to read
Life in his seaside town is uneventful for Hal Robinson, nothing unusual, exciting or odd ever happens to him - until now that is. Until the summer of his 16th birthday when he reaches a crossroads of choices in life. He foolishly takes a friend's boat for a day's sailing, gets into difficulty and is rescued by Barry Gorman. Their ensuing relationship results in a tumultuous summer for Hal as he experiences the intense emotions of his first teenage love.

Pickpick

In a moment of passion, an oath is exchanged between two lovers; whichever one of them dies first, the other will dance on his grave. Hal, our pithy narrator, likens his hobby to an admission of madness. A hobby that is none other than death itself. It is this very fascination that makes Hal the philosophical genius that he is, as he pens the series of events that lead up to him being arrested for damaging the grave of his late lover. Profound.
