Why?
Why?: What Makes Us Curious | Mario Livio
7 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Astrophysicist and author Mario Livio investigates perhaps the most human of all our characteristicscuriosityas he explores our innate desire to know why. Experiments demonstrate that people are more distracted when they overhear a phone conversationwhere they can know only one side of the dialoguethan when they overhear two people talking and know both sides. Why does half a conversation make us more curious than a whole conversation? In the ever-fascinating Why? Mario Livio interviewed scientists in several fields to explore the nature of curiosity. He examined the lives of two of historys most curious geniuses, Leonardo da Vinci and Richard Feynman. He also talked to people with boundless curiosity: a superstar rock guitarist who is also an astrophysicist; an astronaut with degrees in computer science, biology, literature, and medicine. What drives these people to be curious about so many subjects? Curiosity is at the heart of mystery and suspense novels. It is essential to other forms of art, from painting to sculpture to music. It is the principal driver of basic scientific research. Even so, there is still no definitive scientific consensus about why we humans are so curious, or about the mechanisms in our brain that are responsible for curiosity. Mario Livioan astrophysicist who has written about mathematics, biology, and now psychology and neuroscienceexplores this irresistible subject in a lucid, entertaining way that will captivate anyone who is curious about curiosity.

Ash and I are left here wondering WHY our new books didn't come today. WHY does the tracking site still say it's "out for delivery" this late at nite?
Good news is I started this book - "Why?" -from the library last nite and now must own it! I rarely love a book enough to want to write my thoughts in it but this is one of them. WHY NOT? And I love the cover art! ? ? ?

Everyone in my immediate family could be described as having a quality of openness, and of remaining deeply curious about the world around us as we age, so I wasn't surprised to learn that these are genetic characteristics. Other aspects of the curious brain include the ability to think beyond and the ability to ignore the obvious. This #audiobook is fascinating and narrator Arthur Morey's dynamic warmth is pleasant on the ears.

I've got about 75 minutes remaining in this #audiobook and the author has just referenced work on de-extincting the woolly mammoth, which is the topic of the next audiobook I have waiting for me in Overdrive: Woolly by Ben Mezrich. Synchronicity!

HardcoverHearts I love when those things happen! 7y

'My greatest joy is when I learn something new.' This is precisely what defines an intellectually curious person.

[That's me. 🙋🏼]

John Keats introduced the term "negative capability" to argue that the ability to tolerate and even embrace uncertainty, and the willingness to let the unknown remain mysterious, are essential qualities for poetic and literary achievement.

kspenmoll Love this quote & the bookshelves.😍 7y
Lindy @kspenmoll Thanks! The bookshelf is from an amazing shop in Lisbon that selected their stock based on what hundreds of people listed as their favourite books. 7y
saresmoore That sounds like the ideal bookshop! 7y
Lindy @saresmoore It's ideal for someone just browsing for a good book, but not if you have a specific title in mind. 7y
