As Birds Bring Forth the Sun and Other Stories
As Birds Bring Forth the Sun and Other Stories | Alistair MacLeod
3 posts | 2 to read
The superbly crafted stories collected in Alistair MacLeod’s As Birds Bring Forth the Sun and Other Stories depict men and women acting out their “own peculiar mortality” against the haunting landscape of Cape Breton Island. In a voice at once elegiac and life-affirming, MacLeod describes a vital present inhabited by the unquiet spirits of a Highland past, invoking memory and myth to celebrate the continuity of the generations even in the midst of unremitting change. His second collection, As Birds Bring Forth the Sun and Other Stories confirms MacLeod’s international reputation as a storyteller of rare talent and inspiration. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Just finished a slow re-read of this collection which I first read and loved in university. But wow, these stories are bleak! Lots of hardship and death, themes that hit harder at 47 than at 22. But there was also something comforting about revisiting this landscape, as I'm missing my Maritime home. #canlit

I have a couple autographed copies of Alistair MacLeod's later works in a box somewhere back in Canada, still unread, but it is the memories of my encounter with him at AWP in Vancouver in 2005 that I will treasure the most. Saw this, an early collection of his stories, in the bookstore the other day. It's high time I read some of his stuff!

merelybookish He autographed my copy of Lost Salt Gift of Blood. I love this short stories! 7y
