Fatherland
Fatherland | Nina Bunjevac
5 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
In 1975 Nina Bunjevac’s mother fled her marriage and her adopted country of Canada and took Nina back to Yugoslavia to live with her parents. Peter, her husband, was a fanatical Serbian nationalist who had been forced to leave his country at the end of World War II and migrate to Canada. But even there he continued his activities, joining a terrorist group that planned to set off bombs at the homes of Tito sympathisers and at Yugoslav missions in Canada and the USA. Then in 1977, while his family were still in Yugoslavia, a telegram arrived to say that a bomb had gone off prematurely and Peter and two of his comrades had been killed.Nina Bunjevac tells her family’s story in superb black-and-white artwork. Fatherland will be recognised as a masterpiece of non-fiction comics, worthy to stand beside Persepolis and Palestine.

An excellent graphic novel! Nina Bunjevac, a Canadian Artist of Serbian origin, deals with her family's history which is as complicated as the 20th Century Serbian/Yugoslavian history. Autobiographical narrative, powerfull story and beautiful black and white drawings.

I was interested in Fatherland because my family came to Canada from Yugoslavia, just as Nina Bunjevac's family did. I was interested in Bunjevac's personal story, and the history of Yugoslavia is something I have always wanted to learn more about. Parts of it just moved too slowly, parts didn't give enough detail, and sometimes I just wished it was a bit more personal.

"I would do anything you ask but I am too deep in sh*t and cannot get out of it." Frequently on lists of must-read graphic memoirs, this both chronicles and parallels the unfortunate life of her father (who, among many things, is a terrorist) and the unfortunate history of the Balkins (specifically the former Yugoslavia).

Excellent graphic history of the history of the Balkans in the 20th century told through the lens of a woman whose father was a terrorist bent on overthrowing the Yugoslav government.
