Written in a French style that long defied successful translation Cocteau was always a poet no matter what we was writing the book came into its own for English-language readers in 1955 when this translation was completed by Rosamund Lehmann. It is a masterpiece of the art of translation of which the Times Literary Supplement said: "It has the rare merit of reading as though it were an English original." Lehrmann was able to capture the essence of Cocteau's strange, necromantic imagination and to bring fully to life in English his story of a brother and sister, orphaned in adolescence, who build themselves a private world out of one shared room and their own unbridled fantasies. What started in games and laughter because for Paul and Elisabeth a drug too magical to resist. The crime which finally destroys them has the inevitability of Greek tragedy. Illustrated with twenty of Cocteau's own drawings."

This weekend I went to exibition sharing an eye of how children are portayed in (children‘s) literature - often as enfant terribles. It was very interesting.
Can you guess the books portrayed in the two smaller pictures?

Dilara Pippi Longstocking on the left (looking at the stripy stocking). Not sure sure about the right picture. Alice in Wonderland, maybe, if the teacup is a clue for this book ? But I must say I can't associate anything with that booted, naked leg. 6mo

Would I have enjoyed this book in the same way if I'd read it when bought, 40 years ago? No, certainly not. Would I have enjoyed it at all? That's a harder question. I think so, but being then nearer to childhood, and inhabiting similarly closely-bounded emotional territory as the MCs, I'm not sure what I'd've made of it. Better, I think, that I read it now.
Despite a certain inevitability, the end was still a bit of a shock. I'm left feeling pity

Tempted though I was to read another sci fi with a Bruce Pennington cover, I decided to mix it up and read this book, which has been on my to-read-pile since 1982. Nice old 🐧, vintage 1967, illustrated by Cocteau himself, and inspiration for the name of one of my favourite bands, The Cocteau Twins. It's not before time.
