Cremations back then couldn't reach temperatures high enough to completely destroy a body, and the heart is protected by nearby organs, not to mention that the human body contains a lot of water, making it harder to burn. Is a poisoned heart actually fire proof? I've never heard of that before

A fascinating history from an almost contemporary source. From the way it was written it seems that it was written a generation or two after Caligula's Assassination, so unlikely to be completely accurate but a better source than many of the ones out there.

I think everyone knows a little about the story of Caligula, and this builds on that and offers some background on his family and his rise to Emperor, as well as...

TCLinrow detail about his many exploits, tantrums, forays, etc.

Hardly riveting, but interesting.

Fascinating short biography of the insane Roman Emperor Caligula. Murder, torture, incest. No wonder he was assassinated.

writerlibrarian Suetonius is the gossip reporter for the Roman empire era. So much fun to read. (edited) 7y
Brie I love that description. I'll have to read more of his writings then. @writerlibrarian 7y
writerlibrarian The twelves Caesars reads like our modern tabloid. Unfortunately without the picture spread in full colours a la Paris Match. 🙂 7y

Really interesting biography and discovered that I have a folio society copy of 'The Twelve Caesars' so I've added it to the TBR

CrowCAH One of my ex boyfriends was into numismatic stuff, aka collecting coins, and the Caesar coins were what he collected in silver and gold. 7y

TheLondonBookworm Love those books so perfectly sized to put in a small bag when you have a night out and you know there'll be at least one point in the evening you'll be bored 😂😂😂 7y
