Abby Amaro wants to sing at La Scala Opera House, but she's a good girl, and in 1957 good girls get married. Still, when she receives her first marriage proposal, she freezes, knowing the way her suitor makes her feel bodes trouble. When he won't take no for an answer, she flees, joining up with a traveling carnival. Thanks to a burlesque trapeze artist and the world's saddest clown, Abby bides her time and fits in until she can rejoin the world she knows. She doesn't expect a sideshow strongwoman named Suprema, who captures her imagination. As the carnival makes its way across the Midwest, Abby learns much more than she had ever imagined--about herself, about her identity, and, most importantly, about love.

Mehso-so

I went back and forth on the rating for this one. The cover is gorgeous, and the concept of a girl running off to the carnival and falls for the strong woman was too good to pass up. The good: gorgeous imagery and interesting side characters. The bad: the romance was barely touched on and the conflict at the end was wrapped up in less than a paragraph which felt...not enough. Overall a fast, easy, whimsical read that could have been longer/fuller.

Potato has taken to sleeping on top of the canvas box I store my TBR books in under the bed. He has now managed to break the box sides, this is the face of a cat who does not care.

(Please know I've been laughing at his expression for five minutes). #petsoflitsy

LauraBrook I love those looks! My cats give those out often, and they always make me laugh! 😂 7y
CatLadyBibliophile @LauraBrook This is his constant face, it's like living with a tiny judgmental dictator. 7y

christineandbooks Thanks for the chuckle this morning! That is such a cat-ish face..."I could not care less if you have any problems with what I am doing right now. Now leave." 7y
