While there are some parts of the story I enjoyed (mainly about the main character discovering the hidden past of his father), I found the love story unrealistic and unnecessary. That part felt to me like a bad tv romance... I honestly think this book could have been so much better if it only focused on the search for the recipe, the discovery of the father's past and the uncovering of family secrets.

I liked the idea of food becoming the central theme for a novel and the descriptions of Cuba. The 'love' story is not a love story but one of exploitation. Male tourists who take advantage of women who see in them the only way to get out of a country with no prospects- why is this man, this 'relationship' different? I wish the author had focused on culture, food, history of Cuba and the family history, then this would have been a pick ...

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I honestly don't miss meat at all but it'd be nice to have a menu full of options! (Melbourne is a pretty good place to a vegetarian tho) 7y
