I've been exploring Southeast Asia through books lately. This was quite lovely! It's based on the story of the author's grandmother.

Indonesian writer Pramoedya Ananta Toer's best known work may be the Buru Quartet, which he wrote when he was in prison (actually he narrated them to his fellow prisoners as he wasn't allowed to have any writing equipment). But I loved this novel about a young village girl who marries a nobleman and adapts to her new life in a big house in the city. It's based on the writer's grandmother's life & set in the Dutch colonial era
