All Magnolia Vickers ever wanted was to follow in her father's path and head up the Family business. And, once upon a time, she and Carter Landlow were going to do it together. But new legislation is about to destroy the Family's operations in the black-market organ trade, and Carter, her love, is dead. Then Maggie runs into Alex, who needs something her family is uniquely able to deliver, and he's willing to manipulate her to get it. Maggie hates being blackmailed into fulfilling his bargain, but the longer it takes to help him--and as Alex's health declines--Maggie is surprised to find herself falling for him. Like it or not, if she wants to save Alex's life and carve out a place in the new legalized organ business, she's going to have to fight for both. With swoon-worthy romance and thrilling tension perfect for fans of Holly Black and Kimberly Derting, this second book in the Once Upon a Crime Family series will hold readers spellbound.

This book was hard for me to read because much of it was set in the world of dialysis and that is still very fresh from having experienced that with my dad not to long ago. However, I did enjoy it and liked that Magnolia got her own book.... I sure hope there is a third installment because they left some questions up in the air!

It started slow (like the first book) and Maggie went from just prickly to unlikeable a few too many times in the first half BUT the second half picked up speed and restored Maggie's humanity. The overall world of these books is fascinating and while the main storyline wraps up nicely there are many loose ends in the larger world that I am looking forward to learning about.

"And like every time Alex held a mirror to my privilege, the reflection glaring back wasn't flattering."

Teaching teens to check their privilege in a book about crime families powered by illegal organ transplants.

"Time and opportunity and privilege were starting to sit uncomfortably on my skin...All doors were open to me--I was the one turning my back or slamming them shut...

Because while he was the one with the failed kidneys, being around him made me feel like my own insides were rotted and irreparably broken."

I'm taking some vacation time this week to help me shore up my mental energies before the holidays get in full swing. I'm also really hoping to make a dent in some reading goals. I've had this title out since the summer. I started it then, made it about 75 pages, then put it aside. Now it's overdue from the library and I've decided I can't part with it until I've finished it! About halfway through now.

Starting my second car soon to be vacation read! I enjoyed the first in the series but wasn't sure I'd be reading a second. So far it is just as good as the first if a tiny bit slow to get going.

I enjoyed it, I liked Magnolia in the previous book and was glad to have a whole book of her. Hold Me was stronger, but this was still fun.

Downside of ebooks: can't take stylish pictures of the cover! A picture of last month's Taylor Swift Vogue should hopefully be a sufficient substitute for Tiffany Schmidt's Break Me Like a Promise 🌟

Beautiful skies for a beautiful book. This book has so many strong female characters and each are a different kind of strong. Some are loud, some are quiet, some are strong in their kindness and others in their forcefulness. SO MANY EXCELLENT WOMEN.

Loved the first book and am excited to dive into the second! I've got a feeling Magnolia is my kind of badass lead character
