Seeker's Bane
Seeker's Bane | P. C. Hodgell
7 posts | 1 read
Two epic novels of fantasy adventure in one volume: Seeker's Mask: After an epic adventure that will become the stuff of legend, Jame has been reunited with her older brother Torisen and with her people, the Kencyrath. But when she is placed in the Women's Halls and expected to become a normal, quiet Kencyr lady, normal and quiet are not what the Women's Halls are going to get. Shadow Guild Assassins, ghosts, and other strange beings are soon after her, sprung not only from her own adventurous past but from the tragic, mysterious events that nearly annihilated her family in her father's time. To Ride a Rathorn: Jame's adventures continue as she arrives at the randon military college Tentir to face cut-throat competition and find even more buried, poisonous family secrets. The Kencyr have a phrase, "to ride a rathorn," referring to a task too dangerous either to accomplish or to give up. This is true for Jame both figuratively, given her military career in a college which no Highborn girl has ever attended before, and literally, in that she is being stalked by one of these murderous, ivory-clad creatures whose mother she killed and who is now after her blood. All in all, Jame's school days are shaping up to be anything but golden. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). "Hodgell has crafted an excellent and intricate fantasy with humor and tragedy, and a capable and charming female hero. Highly recommended." Library Journal

Two chapters in and Jame‘s new quarters have already been set on fire. This time, not her fault, for once.

Re-reading ‘To Ride a Rathorn‘ because I didn‘t review it last year. A small thrill just picking up ‘Seeker‘s Bane‘; love Hodgell. I love her instances of quirkiness. A page in and I know I‘m on Rathillien. I‘m pretty sure catfish don‘t head for the hills on our earth when there‘s an earthquake.

Going onto “To Ride a Rathorn” in the Baen omnibus “Seeker‘s Bane”. The action continues 1 day after the end of “Seeker‘s Mask” though the first was published in 1994 and the second in 2006. Only a chapter in but Graykin‘s personality seems more unpleasant in the intervening day/ decade.
Several typos jumped out at me in the first book and already in the second there are missing words.
But I‘m looking forward to reading more of Jame‘s adventures.

Pickpick

Seeker‘s Mask
Jame, the last surviving Knorth lady, goes to Gothregor, her brother Tori's keep, and is secluded in the Women's World to learn how to behave as a proper Highborn lady and await her disposition by the lords. Her disruptive destiny finds her and follows her as she journeys along the Riverland, discovering more about her heritage, the powers of Rathillien and the fate of the Kencyr.
I like Hodgell‘s quirky humour. Really enjoyed this.

Loving the humour (arboreal drift!) and quirkiness. This series will bear re-reading soon, to catch all the nuances. At the moment I‘m going full-tilt just to find out what happens next!

I‘m thoroughly enjoying returning to Jame‘s exploits on Rathillien.

I like the cover, except for the way that illustrator Caldwell has depicted Jame. He‘s made her rather busty when it has been pointed out that we are constantly told she is ‘boyishly slim‘ and she looks like she‘s in her thirties as opposed to her teens. :0(
