Saints of the Shadow Bible
Saints of the Shadow Bible | Ian Rankin
7 posts | 10 read | 5 to read
Rebus and Malcolm Fox go head-to-head when a 30-year-old murder investigation resurfaces, forcing Rebus to confront crimes of the pastRebus is back on the force, albeit with a demotion and a chip on his shoulder. He is investigating a car accident when news arrives that a case from 30 years ago is being reopened. Rebus's team from those days is suspected of helping a murderer escape justice to further their own ends.Malcolm Fox, in what will be his last case as an internal affairs cop, is tasked with finding out the truth. Past and present are about to collide in shocking and murderous fashion. What does Rebus have to hide? And whose side is he really on? His colleagues back then called themselves "The Saints," and swore a bond on something called the Shadow Bible. But times have changed and the crimes of the past may not stay hidden much longer -- and may also play a role in the present, as Scotland gears up for a referendum on independence. Allegiances are being formed, enemies made, and huge questions asked. Who are the saints and who the sinners? And can the one ever become the other?

Kinda strange that my first Ian Rankin read is book #19 in the John Rebus series but I loved it and I will go back to the start of the series now so I guess I can be forgiven 😁

@PuddleJumper One of my March #Roll100 picks.

I am on a Rebus roll at the moment, these are when he comes out of retirement. The first one is Standing in Another Man's Grave. I posted about already.

This story delves into Rebus's past at the beginning of his career and a group of cops called The Shadow Bible. I just really like Rebus! I have already read the next one!

I haven't read rankin for a few years and had forgotten how much i love his storytelling and his brilliant detective john rebus. And having read him for 20+ yrs he is the only writer who inspired me to by cds he references, here Jackie leven has the opening quote + it is a gr8 album.
The story is as ever rebus pitching against authority, villains, whilst aging catches up with him as the indep ref looms, old colleagues pressure him + bodies appear.

Anna40 Now I'm curious... What are some of the CDs you bought that were mentioned in the book? 4y
andrew61 @Anna40 the one at the front is 'fairy tales for hard men' by Jackie leven, at the back was best of rory Gallagher. Leven was, i think, a friend of rankin. The books are peppered with references to rebus listening to classic rock on vinyl records whilst he thinks about the crimes he solves whilst nursing a whisky, Bit clichéd but definitely good taste. 4y
Anna40 Thanks! Always looking for new music. Love when music or other books are referenced in novels :) 4y

Listening to Becoming (only have a few hours left), knowing I will finish reading these four books tonight! Another tough week, including three job interviews within 24 hours and a funeral today. I have earned a night of reading! Yesterday I read for 7 hours 🙂#readathon #24B4Monday @Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid

I read the whole thing in about 15 hours... Which included 8 hours of sleeping! (Yay vacation!) Ian Rankin is SUCH a good writer. Highly recommended.

Marangbiti Do I need to read the Inspector Rebus books in order? 8y
howjessicareads The order matters somewhat in terms of his personal life @Marangbiti, but not really in terms of the mysteries. I've skipped around, just mentally adjusted when he's married (or not). :) 8y
Marangbiti Thanks! Good to know ;) 8y
