The whole thing is about her mom dying, fine, but I couldn‘t get over how unlikeable and whiny and self obsessed the narrator was

This book is absolutely outstanding. It is so well written. It‘s moving, inspiring, heartbreaking and allows a glimpse into the hurdles and adversity that most of us will never experience. It will give you a great big dose of empathy. I‘m so glad to have read it.
Sasha taqwšəblu LaPointe is a Court Salish woman living in Tacoma, Washington. In these essays, she writes about her family, her history, and her concerns as a queer indigenous woman. The essays' topics are wide-ranging and deeply personal. She writes about food, culture, her relationship with her mother, her queerness and more. Throughout, who she is and what her passions are loud and clear. Recommended.
Read this in 2 sittings. It was beautiful and sad. Very accurate depictions of grief.
I‘m late to the party on this one. Found it in a LFL & discovered after reading it that it had won a Pulitzer. The memoir of an Asian American speaking of his sense of alienation as a teen, his time in college as he dives into friendships, activism, music, & community. And, in particular, he brings us into his friendship with Ken. Hsu brings us up short when he ultimately reveals what happened to Ken. The book feels both aloof & very personal.
Listening to the audiobook on out trip up north to Traverse City Michigan, this made the 3 hour trip go quickly. Saving the rest for the trip home to Kalamazoo on Monday. This is one of the best audiobooks out there. A must listen to, especially if you are a fan of the movie The Princess Bride. If you haven't seen it you should.
This is my #ReadOrDonate selection for June. Several of you have already posted. 👍😃 What will everyone else be reading? 🤔
I despised the book from the first page, but unfortunately I was at a point in my life in which finishing what I started reading was an absolute necessity. I‘ve become wiser since then.”
