#StorySettings Day 31: This narrative is based on the thousands of stories of Chinese immigrants who journeyed from their hometown in China aboard a #Ship to Ellis Island to find their paper families in America. My full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-9Dd

My Side of the River: A Memoir | Elizabeth Camarillo Gutierrez

Mehso-so

The first half or so of this memoir is very good, detailing the author‘s childhood as an American with undocumented parents from Mexico, trying to live under the radar but still provide for their kids. When they decide to return to Mexico to try to reestablish their visas, they are rejected and stuck there, leaving Elizabeth with impossible choices. The second half falls apart, as she leaves so many aspects of her college years and adulthood ⬇️

Hooked_on_books ⬆️ unexplored. There was clearly rich material there, but she‘s so quick to get to a particular detail that she leaves it unmined and I found myself disappointed. Hers is an important story to tell to combat the politically motivated lies about immigrants, so I wish it was a stronger book throughout. 4w

This has been on my TBR forever. Finally picked it up and am so glad I did. The drawings are incredible. They convey a sense of emotion with no words. The way they show time passing is unique. The story is touching and shows how immigrants have to feel their way through all new situations. I highly recommend for the strong emotional imagery.

I listened to this book and there are so many passages I wish I could go back and read. Everyone needs this book. Having the author narrate on the audio was an added bonus, and I have not gotten Vargas‘s story out of my head all week.

Texreader Such a good book 3mo

I love going into books not knowing anything about the story. This story is about two girls who enter the United States illegally trying to seek asylum. They get caught and are held while it‘s decided if they will get asylum or not. The girls escape and that is where the story really begins. I listened to the audiobook which I really enjoyed. 4*
